Walker Armistead was not the first USMA graduate. Armistead was one of three that graduated in 1803. He is considered to be the third USMA graduate. (Cullum Number 3). ( Number 2 was Simon Levy in 1802).

The first graduate of the USMA was Joseph Gardner Swift. He graduated on October 12, 1802. This began a Swift family tradition at West Point. His brother, William, graduated in 1819. His son, Alex, was first in his class in 1830. A grandson was also a graduate.
