Sam, Well I hate to take Comrade Cunningham to task, but his statement about the Tennesseans, if meant to be literal or nearly so, is completely inaccurate. The muster rolls do not support his claim. Moreover, furloughs were not granted during the retreat. Furloughs were granted to Cheatham's and Stewart's men after reaching Mississippi, but not before. Small numbers may have been informally allowed to go home, but what sense that made I cannot figure since the Yankees were pretty much on the Confederates' behind from December 16 thru Christmas Day.
