|I am not particuarly a fan of any yankee general and don't much like defending them.(LOL) HOwever, Grant's "drinking problem" has been much overstated. I believe he did have a problem during a long separation from his family due to being posted on the frontier (california?) prior to the war and was allowed to resign his commisssion rahther than face courtmartial. This was, as I recall, the result of loneliness and homesickness. I do not believe there is any creditable evidence that he drank at all, much less to excess during the war...frankly, I wish he had!
