izzy- Perhaps the concept you are looking for is: "Leading from the front." This is not a new concept in military history. Connelly, O.: On War and Leadership: The Words of Combat Commanders from Frederick the Great to Norman Schwarzkopf. Commanders who lead from the front do so in order to better control their operations, and to motivate their troops to achieve their objectives. Those commanders who are willing to share the dangers and hardships endured by their men earn their respect and loyalty. Properly motivated, their troops will follow them anywhere, even unto death.
