The only thing that makes any sense to me is that his mind was affected by his numerous and severe wounds. We know a lot more about Phantom limb pain today then they knew at the time. We also know more about the psychological effects of severe trauma. Today, I seriously doubt any commander would be allowed to take the field with such wounds
