As I recall, THE HORSE SOLDIERS, a John Wayne tale, depicting the Grierson Raid from LaGrange, Tenn, to Newton Station, Miss and then on to Baton Rouge, is about the only '60's era movie that had more than a grain of truth in it. Except for the obvious poetic liscense and the uniforms, the movie is pretty good account of the Raid. Here in Central Illinois, Grierson Days is celebrated every year with a very nice reenactment. Grierson was from Jacksonville, Illinois, home of Illinois College, my Alma Mater, along with William Jennings Bryan, and a fellow named John Wesley Powell, the explorer of the Grand Canyon....and no, I did not know either of them... Old, but not that old! Ed
