Val Verde was the prelude to Glorietta. Sibley was always headed to his wagon when the battles raged. He was famous for three or four things. The sibley tent, the sibley stove, writing letters to complain if he didn't get what he wanted and drinking to excess. Thank goodness for the Union he was in charge of the Confederate troops in New Mexico Territory. I would have to look at the movie again but it seems there was a scene of horses leaping the arroyo which is one of the "myths" of Glorietta but celebrated in a famous painting of the battle . Taylor along with another author who I cannot think of at the moment also wrote a book on Glorietta Pass . The Lancers at Valverde had a problem with their lances , they had ribbons on them and the ribbons got fouled up with the blades when they tried to fight with them . The best lancers were during the Mexican War in California . They were the Californios used lances against the USA Army in seveal battles lead by one of the Pico brothers. Susan
