Pam, "Marching through Culpeper" is a Civil War novel by Virginia Beard Morton. All the characters are real people except the heroine and her family. It's about the Civil War in Culpeper County, VA, told from the viewpoint of the civilians who suffered so much during the war. It's the only novel I've ever read with footnotes, such as "The hotel building still stands, but is now a bank." In my opinion it's the best novel of that era. I've heard that Mrs. Morton has been approached to make it into a TV miniseries. That would be terrific. It would have battles and gore, scary adventures and escapes, murder, romance, sex, beautiful ballgowns, and handsome soldiers like "The Gallant Pelham." Patty aka Widow
