For the Union side, I highly recommend Frank Wilkeson's 'Turned inside out'. Not technically one I'm currently reading as I devoured it last week, but it's probably the best memoir I've read, at least since 'Co H'. His style is crisp, devoid of the Victorian flourish, and, at times, brutally frank*. There are even some bits that haunted me after I put the book down. *pun not intended.
