Why was I under the impression that Halleck really wanted to relegate Grant to the far, far West, and make him pretty much a non-issue? I always got the feeling, based on what I read a long time ago, that Halleck didn't like Grant--or maybe thought he was a threat to his own position somehow? And that he wasn't thrilled with Grant's performance at Henry and Donelson. Honestly, this goes back to when I first got interested in the CW, so I can't even give you a source for that. Pam
