Sadly, you are unlikely to risk offending people by talking about waterfalls (although I'd love to try). Much like the 200th anniversary of Lewis and Clark came and went with no fanfare, I'm thinking that most people prefer not to think about history. Part of the problem is that the audience is self-selecting. Those who want to know about history will attend the museum. Of course, we might get the odd passerby who runs in for shelter one day and sparks an interest, but that's the exception more than the rule. I realised a while ago that I have never gone to any English Civil War battlefields, or even have the slightest idea about the state of their preservation other than hunting for the crossed swords symbol on the OS map. Without awareness, these things just get lost.
