Another reason to add is the fact that Harold's army had just defeated a Norwegian army earlier in 1066 thus leaving his army tired and potentially weakened. Agree that this was one of the top history changing battles of all times along with the Battle of Tours (Poitiers) in 732 which halted Islamic progression into western europe.
