I teach The Diary of Anne Frank to my eighth graders, and this article caught my eye yesterday. Miep Gies was the last of those who hid the Frank family from the Nazis for two years. I find it very fitting that she outlived most of those who persecuted those she risked her life to save. I especially am humbled by the fact that she never wanted to to called a hero for her actions, because then she thought young people would think that a person had to have special qualities to do something heroic. Few people I can think of can be considered in the same category as her, then, now, or ever. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/world/europe/12gies.html Pam
