When I was about 12 years old (early '80s) I lived in Downtown Fairfax VA across the street from the current Fairfax County Courthouse.  I was playing in a creek when I found what looks like the business end of a medieval battle flail/morning star.  I know that the Battle of Fairfax Courthouse took place right where I was and I am pretty sure that Mosby's Raiders camped at or near the site as well.

I've attached pictures.  Were weapons such as these used in the Civil War?  If not, any idea where I might turn to find out what this is or how old it is?

Thanks in advance for any advice or information.
