He was killed in hand to hand combat on the evening of day 2, on Cemetery Hill. He died (shot in the stomach) protecting his battery's guidon. (Rickett's battery, 1st Pennsylvania Artillery.) The revolver shot, at point blank range, split the flag's staff in two. His brothers in arms paid to have his body sent home to Delmarva, where I regularly put flowers on his grave. James H.
