I'd look more towards colonial times ... and possibly an artifact or family relic brought over ... could this piece of equipment have been carried by a British soldier in the exploration years ? What about during the American Revolution period ? Jason asked "Were weapons such as these used in the Civil War?" I don't know about "used", but I know many men carried eccentric weapons (in the early days of The War). There was a regimental commander from South Carolina who carried a pair of the short-handled halberd-type axes; they had belonged to his grandfather who had used them in the Revolution ....
