I'm writing a novel set in 1869, and have a wounded hero. As I understand it, basilicum powder was used to pack wounds in that time in an effort to avoid infection. I can't find any information for this use in Bing or Google. Is there somewhere else I can look, or can anyone here enlighten me. I did find something to the effect that it has a a drying effect. Would that have been the reason for its use? Any help gratefully appreciated.
