I use fold3 and have used ancestry.com. I use the microfilm at the local library for census records sometimes and we also have a genealogical library nearby. If you can find a small genealogical library or society in the town your ancestors came from, you sometimes hit a gold mind. If not, usually those people can at least steer you in the right direction. I think Fold3 is in the process of getting more Federal info. The southern information is not as extensive. This is just a guess of why they don't have as much Yank info.
