While reading Nagel's The Lee's of Virginia I came across the mention of Robert E. Lee's older brother Sydney Smith Lee. The only information I can find on him is that he served in both the US Navy/Confederate Navy, sailed with Perry to Japan, was commandant of the naval academy and charge of the Philadelphia naval yard. His family nickname was Rose. He was the father of Fitzhugh Lee. Smith Lee died 1868 in Stafford Co., Va. Would welcome any further information including his civil war record.
