A fascinating subject. In my book on the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry there is an account of a soldier from California who deserted to Mosby's Rangers, was captured leading a raid on his own camp, and was subsequently court martialed and executed. Here at the Interpretive Center in Corinth, MS we have two photos (before & after) of an execution of a soldier from the 1st Alabama Cavalry (US). Just recently a family in Oregon discovered a cache of letters from a relative in the 52nd Illinios. In one of the letters is an eye-witness account of the execution.
