David: Sometimes he was careful in his reports and official correspondence. Sometimes he came off as a raving lunatic. Recommend Sherman's Civil War -- a collection of his private correspondence during the war years. A humongus book, but worth every page and minute. Best thing is, you don't have to rely on Marzalek or Kennet or Fellman or Castel or anyone else's interpretation -- you get to make your own. ole
