I agree with most of what you say, except the idea that the yeoman was not affected by the tariff. I believe they were probably more affected. A protectionist tariff is designed to raise the cost of goods by 1. allowing domestic manufacturing to hold higher prices (more profit0 and 2 causing imported goods to be more scarce (expensive). The yeoman was caught right square in the middle of this vise and squeezed every time he had to buy something..
Additionally, the tariff caused the goods exported to be worth less resulting in even less ready cash to purchse goods and services.
