Sorry, folks, I have been traveling, but I am happy to return and see that there is so much interest in this movie. It was interesting to see your other ideas for actresses to play Mary Todd Lincoln.

Here is some research about Sally Field and Kathy Bates (who looks much more like Mary Todd Lincoln.)

Kathy Bates

One Oscar out of three Oscar nominations

Seven Emmy nominations

One Tony nomination

Two Golden Globe awards

Sally Field

Two Oscars

Three Emmys

Two Golden Globes

They are both formidable actresses. I can think right off hand of only one other who has been a recipient of so many awards and that is Merryl Streep. She could probably do a great job as Mary Todd Lincoln too, but she is in so darned many movies. Oh, I could add the Australian actress Cate Blanchette soon to be seen in Part Two of Elizabeth the First. She is another very capable actress who could probably do credit to the part. But because Sally Field has been chosen, all the rest is just fun to imagine.

I can't wait to see this movie.

My motivation for suggesting Kathy Bates was solely because a) she plays nutcases very well and b) she is appropriately dumpy.

Sally Field does indeed bear a facial resemblance to MTL, and does play "nervous" well. However MTL was a full-figured gal. But, I guess if Leam Neeson can play a 6 foot 4 inch gangly guy, Sally Field can play his pudgy wife.

Just an aside. You never get to see Lincon in a T shirt. That wasn't done as a shirt was considered underwear, but I've read that his arms (hanging on that frame) were massive. If you've seen the casting of his fist, you can well imagine the strength in his arms.

I don't know about yummy, but if he is 6' 4," then he has my approval. There's no way to approximate Lincoln's looks, but his other distinctive characteristic was his height--especially when compared to the average of the time. Having him be the same height as all the other characters would just ruin the movie for me.

Spielbergfilms.com says this project is on hold as of 2006! Couldn't find any other *new* news on the project. *sigh* Oh well...

Oh, and I liked Sally Fields in Smokey and the Bandit, too. ;)
