Personally, I think both so called "versions" are covered in myth and romanticism. Neither side is entirely correct or entirely wrong.

If you really want to get into it, you have to go all the way back to the original Constitution and start there. The next 72 years then gives you plenty of reasons for the war.

I think its origins can be traced back to the disputes between Jefferson and Hamilton. Read up on these two men and I think you will then have a better understanding of why the North went one way and the South a different way. Dont forget it may have started there but when the Border Wars started bettween Kansas and Missouri kinda made everything tip slightly towards the edge then John Brown did what he did and with Abe being elected we went all the way over the edge.

Gents, please remember John Brown was neither the first of his kind and certainly not the worst. He was the first anti-slavery man to use pro slavery tactics. If anything I wonder if the problems didn't arise between Adams & Jefferson.

The seeds definitely go back to the beginnings. Jefferson wrote, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." He wrote this while being a slave owner. Convenience over conviction?

Did Jefferson consider male slaves men?

Jefferson got himself stuck on the same dilemma's horns that gored Lincoln. This is not right -- now, how do we fix it? Ummmmmm. I don't know. At the time (and as Dixie Girl has pointed out, some of that is still around), the black was considered to be incapable of surviving without the support of whites. Lincoln supported colonization; Jefferson gave up trying to find an answer. That both have been proven to be wrong is beside the point. Just a thought. ole

I threw that out there as a possible justification for Jefferson saying that all men are created equal. If slaves, or blacks, were not men in his eyes, then all is good with his words. I think it was Jefferson that said something along the lines of - slavery is like holding a tiger by the tail - you don't like it, but you don't dare let go either.

That was Churchill, and he wasn't referring to slavery. -Dictators ride to and fro on tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry. Winston Churchill

I think that Jefferson said it was like holding a wolf by the ears. Whatever. It's the thought that counts. To make a short story longer (and to avoid having to go outside an work some more), I do believe that Jefferson did actually believe that "all men" included the black man. He just didn't have a clue as to how that might be accomplished. (It would take 200 more years for people to begin to accept that self-evident truth, and some of us can't exactly get our fingers around it yet.) Whether he did, or not, is quite irrelevant. We, the people, weren't on the same wavelength. ole
