You have to remember that Cunningham's work was not a book, when written, but a PhD Dissertation when he was studying at LSU under T. Harry Williams. Cunningham later tought Civil War at Tulane in New Orleans. Smith takes Cunningham's dissertation and put it into book form, making changes where necessary. When read with the other books, particularly by Sword, they comprise an excellant study. Cunningham was an interesting man and equally interesting professor. I studied under him at Tulane. He died far too early in life, in the 1990's. A Shiloh guide believed alcohol to be a cause of death. I don't know. He firmly believed that Lew Wallace was not to blame for appearing tardy on day 1.
