Unlike, Manassas, Gettysburg or Shiloh which are "bulk" parks; Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville and the Wilderness are composed of slivers of land comparatively speaking. It is distressing to see what has happened to the the corridor of those great battlefields stretching from the Rappahannonck to to intersection of Routes 3 and 20.

Many years ago, I worked at Fredricksburg and Spotsylvania NMP as a summer interpretive specialist. It was a great job. I was a Confederate soldier in the trenches along Lee Drive on the Confederate right flank.

I've gone back several times over the years and have been increasingly disappointed by the Virginians of that area who have allowed their sacred land to be mauled by commercialism. I realize that the economy is not great and I guess jobs are jobs. But, try interpreting a battle scene by trenches bounded by trees through which bi level ranch homes are easily visible.

I haven't gone back in about 5 years and doubt if I ever will. It is just too disheartening to see the area I once loved so much be destroyed an acre at a time.

I have visited the area and the trafic is BAD now.Wal-Mart will make it even worse. What I can't figure out is why Wal-Mart needs another store. They cannot keep the shelves stocked in our store, and are taking out shelves to supposedly widen ailse space. What store cuts stock to widen aisles???
