Naim Peress posted on his blog (http://www.civilwarblogspot.com) about the sale of Lincoln's December 4, 1864 State of the Union speech.  I would like to know if you think it better for these documents to be in public or private hands.  Also, which of Lincoln's papers would you prefer to own?  My preference would be the Gettysburg Address.

I'd like the card he wrote to Sen. Ashmun the night Lincoln was shot

Would those be the final words that he wrote?  If so, that would be something.

Yes they are-and his final signature too.

I'll try to find a copy online and post it

This was the best I could do-a scan from Reck's 'His Last 24 Hours'

On the left is Sen Ashmun, the note is in the middle(it was on a small business-type card ; they just reproduced the writing), and on the right is Judge Charles Daly, who was to accompany Ashmun to the April 15 meeting with Lincoln.

I remember reading about this. I think Lincoln told them to come the next day. It was a minor, sundry matter. Thanks for sending it.
