Just finished this book "The Gentleman versus the Rogue: The opposing personalities and strategies of Joseph Hooker and RE Lee" by Edward Longacre.

I thought this book was very well laid out, it detailed every relevant event up to the battle of Chancellorsville. Longacre did a thorough job of explaining where each commander was mentally before the battle, which helps in understanding their movements and actions quite a bit. It also clears up a lot of misplaced blame, I think, or at least that was in my mind.

As with most books on a single event, it was a bit wordy, but of course you can always skim those parts.

He gets very detailed, and not just on the juicy parts like Jackson's flanking movement, but Sedgwicks' difficulties at Fredericksburg and the struggle at the church as well.

All in all, I highly recommend this book.

Alexis,

Ed is one of the busiest CW historians I know.  Seems like he has a new book out on the Civil War every day. :)  In fact, coming later this year, he has a new bio. on Grant ready to hit the shelves.  Have yet to read the book on Lee and Hooker, but as I always say, I'll get to it eventually. :)

Regards from the Garden State,

Steve Basic
