I know this is an old thread and all, but looking at some of the suggestions for possible what if if Lee hadn't taken command of the Army of Northern Virginia I can't help wondering if it wouldn't have been like some of the commanders of the Army of the Potomac. Folks that really shouldn't have been put in command of the entire army type of thing, they might do better at brigade, division, or corps level but at the army level they probably wouldn't have had what was needed to hold the ANV together.
