A short conversation with a cyber-friend got me thinking about this. With baseball season coming up fast, I might have to nominate "Field of Dreams". Asking your dead dad if he wants to "have a catch". Pretty cheesy.

"The Patriot"?
Cheesy movie?
You mean that wasn't a historical documentary.

I had to write a paper as a "historical consultant" for The Patriot in college. I think my favorite line in the paper said somthing to the effect of "the depiction of the British regulars as SS divisions rolling across Russia was perhaps a little over the top." Interestingly enough though, I recently read a book on the AWI in South Carolina and found that the combat was actually was much more violent than I had thought previously. However, the atrocities were mostly Tory vs. Whig and grew out of prewar acrimony between back-country farmers and low-country farmers. Regardless... a cheesy movie indeed.

"The Patriot" was Professor Foner's choice for worst Hollywood history.

Though, I did find it marginally enjoyable.

I'm gonna get groans for this, but I thought "Gods and Generals" was cheesy......It could (should) have been a better movie.......

No groans here albert. Have loaded that puppy about a hunnert  times and have yet to stay awake through the whole thing. Something about it just makes me want to go fix something to eat.

Have owned that set of cd's for more than a few years now and still have not seen it from beginning to end. About a half hour in and I feel the need to mow the lawn. Or make potato salad.

Ole

I heard that someone in Hollywood was planning to do a remake of Gond with the Wind. I wonder if that is still on?

Only if judged by today's standards...in it's time it was considered quite authentic.
It's all about context...I suspect very few "classics" would escape the cheesy label when viewed through today's jaundiced eye......No offense Susan...I just wanted to use jaundiced in a sentence LOL!

I love it .  You are right we are looking at it with all the information we have now and the techniques to make things realistic.  Raintree County makes Gone with Wind look so much better.

Elizabeth Taylor chewed every piece of wall paper in every scene.  Don't get me wrong I liked Elizabeth Taylor in many movies.  Raintree County stands alone as the most over acted movie I have ever seen.
