He was killed in hand to hand combat on the evening of day 2, on Cemetery Hill. He died (shot in the stomach) protecting his battery's guidon. (Rickett's battery, 1st Pennsylvania Artillery.) The revolver shot, at point blank range, split the flag's staff in two. His brothers in arms paid to have his body sent home to Delmarva, where I regularly put flowers on his grave. James H. Riggin can be found in many books on Gettysburg. Thanks, Gary Riggin

Welcome to the board. An ancestor of mine served in the La 9th during the ECH charge. When you mention his body being sent home to Delmarva I'm assuming the eastern shore?

Yes, His family was (is) from Maryland. He's buried a few miles away in Delaware. Tiznit
