I just learned today of the passing of Major Richard "Dick" Winters and thought I just like to let others who may have come to be interested in these men know. Though he passed away the second I fear I heard nothing of it until today. Everyday the men and women who served during the war (and yes, there were women who served though not in a combat roll) become fewer and fewer. Yet for most of us they remain the faceless masses who made the generals famous. We may know of relatives who served, perhaps even a few of us served ourselves. But through the book and later the miniseries the men of E Company, 506 PIR, 101st Airborne Division have become a face for so many. We came to know them and, for at least some of us, to want to know a little bit more. Two years ago I recieved an email concerning Shifty Powers passing just over a week before Micheal Jackson. The email had something that still rings true for me There was no parade. These men deserved respect for what they did over sixty years ago. And not just them, but all those who served their country, which ever country that was, to keep the world free. They didn't view themselves as heroes, the heroes were those who never came back. Those who came back were just men who'd had a job to do and they did their job as best they could. Rest in peace, Major Winters. May we long remember you and what you and your men did.

Well said Hellcat. We need to keep the ones on the sharp end of the stick in our memories and our prayers. The ones who were there 60 years ago and the ones who were there 60 minutes ago.

From what I understand Major Winters wanted his passing kept quiet untill after his funeral to protect his familiy's privacy. A true hero and a good man is gone. May he be at peace.
