The earthquake caused damage at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, also known as the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home, a collection of historic buildings about five miles north of the U.S. Capitol that house a few hundred military veteran retirees.
President Lincoln’s Cottage, a National Trust historic site situated on the campus, suffered major structural cracks but no artifacts were broken, according to spokeswoman Allison Mitchell.
The former president lived in the cottage, which sits on a hilltop, for many months during his presidency to escape the heat of Washington . Pieces fell from the exterior of the nearby soldiers’ residence but the extent of the damage inside was unclear, Ms. Mitchell said.
