I'm sure there are many reasons why more people don't play civil war board games. Aside from a general decline in board game play, I wonder if the amount of time it takes to play most of them has something to do with it. There really aren't many out there that you can play in an hour or two. You really almost have to commit a half or whole day to play most of them from start to finish. Anyone seen any good ones out there that are quicker to play? I saw this one on Kickstarter recently,[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1329249285/the-union-torn-asunder-a-civil-war-board-game?ref=email], and hope it gets made, but are there any out there now that you guys know about?

My Pards & I play "Johny Reb III".....It's a strategy game played on a huge table (my table is ping-pong tabled sized.....some of my pards have bigger tables)....You can design your ouwn terrain features or set it up to replicate the battle of your choice....It's played with 15 milli-meter painted lead soldiers.....My Confederate Army, consisting of 3 divisions, 13 batteries and a brigade of Cavalry amount to nearly 1,000 of those figures, each personally hand-painted!!

I've got a division for each side Albert. Its good to see another miniatures gamer on here. My buds and I usually play either Fire and Fury or my own homegrown rules, but we've been known to dabble with Johnny Reb. The JRIII charge sequence is just to much trouble for us lazy folks! Mark

Hey Mark!! I need to paint some Yanks!!.....Usually, I paint September through February at night after work....anoy other months, I try to be outside as much as possible, so it's taken a few years to get my Rebs painted..... Do you make your own fencing, buildings, roads, etc??

Thanks for the info, guys. I don't know much into miniature gaming, but I know it looks pretty interesting. I've only done a few general searches for where to buy minatures, and they seem kind of expensive. Do either of you have any suggestions about where I can buy some inexpensively online if I just want to dip my toes in it a little? Also, which size is best? I see everything from 9mm to 15mm to a lot bigger. My first guess would be that smaller is best for game play, but you guys probably have better insight on that than I do.

Gale, In m opinion, the best quality and least expensive is Musket Miniatures (from Colorado). You should be able to "google" them. They are real freindly to deal with, too! I use the 15 milli-meter size. Have fun with them!

Here's a new board game with miniatures called Tides of War: Gettysburg http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/432345198/tides-of-war-gettysburg-board-app-and-miniatures-g I actually helped develop it and can honestly say it's got some really interesting features that are worth checking out like its phone app that's used to calculate outcomes.

In my experience, you have to dedicate quite a bit of time to playing, and the miniatures can be difficult to find unless you live near battlefields, or in a city with people specialising in such artistry. I know my set was sent to me by a friend in the US, about a year and 1/2 ago. It cost around 243 Euros, which I believe equals bout 300 US dollars. They're quite realistic, however, and I enjoy them. Like model railroading, miniature modeling & and miniature wargaming computers have taken a toll on the hobbies. The kids can get a computer sim or game that does everything in a lot less time. The want of instant gratification is to blame. 20 years ago when I made rent money painting minis Madison Wisconsin had at least 6 game & hobby stores carrying everything from D&D to model railroading sets. Now just 2 and if it weren't for the college they would be gone.

Albert, for the money and quality, Musket's 15mm ACW figures are the best way to go! I do make my own worm fencing out of toothpicks, I am not skilled enough to make my own buildings. I buy them periodically over the years and now I have enough to make a small hamlet now: a couple of small houses with outbuildings along with a church and a school. Mark

Mark, I made my buildings from a mixed bag of assorted sized wooden "chits" or squares that I got from a craft store....For log cabins, I make them from the same chit, but then cut tooth-picks to glue to the sides.....They look ok, but are at least functional.....Buying buildings can get expensive!!  I make my fencing from balsa wood.....Have you ever made stone walls and bridges from styrofoam??......They look pretty cool!!

Ahh the days of midnight clippings from the neighbors hedge turned into trees... matchstick bridges & toothpick fence rails. Used 1/72 but prefered 1/285 scale... 21" to a mile on a 4' x 8' table works well for manuever battles.

Johann, My table is 5 X 9.....hope to make it bigger soon, as my Pards have such huge tables that they are difficult to lean over, even with a step stool!!......We've had great scenarios & games over the years!!.....Sometimes, we set the terrain like a particular battle, other times, we create our own!!

In my case it's you have to have someone to play with, and I don't. Which is why I've played more Civil War games on computer than I have Civil War Board Games.

Same here Hellcat. Several years ago I played board games and it would take most of the day to get thru them. But they were very fun and challenging! Now-a-days, I play Take Command Manassass 2, American Civil War,and Scourge of War. I do have alot of fun and will continue to play them. However, I may dabble back into board games again. (reminisce a bit ya know)
