I'm an editor of state history textbooks with a degree in history. For the life of me, throughout grad school and now at work, I can't seem to find a good compendium of civil war dead broken down by state for both sides. Does anyone know of some good sources (with full citations and/or footnotes to scholarly, reliable works) for such figures? I'm looking for civil war dead (not casualties) for both Union and Confederate, broken down by state. Multiple sources are of course still good. Many thanks in advance!

Check out "Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion." It has a breakdown of casualties by state on p.12. It was published in 1907 by a veteran of the war and is generally still considered the best reference for statistical data like what you are looking for. You can find it for free on Google books.
