Well I think everyone can see that this thread is about the new movie that's out in theaters: "Amazing Grace."  I just went to see the film yesterday, and boy, was I pleased.  The faith and perseverance of Wilberforce to continue to try to reach his ultimate goal was a little short of what really happened, but it was darn near close.
I love how at the dinner party arranged by Wilberforce's friend, William Pitt, they tell him that he can perform the job of a politician, while doing God's work!  Amen to that!

Tell me what you thought of the movie!

CJ

We already had a thread on this. I did see the movie and immediately posted my thoughts here hoping others would go to see the movie or rent the DVD when it comes out. Like you I thought it was an excellent movie. I really hadn't known anything about Wilberforce before seeing the film and I am so glad to have learned about such an inspiring, courageous and exceptional human being. I'm really glad you enjoyed this movie too.:)

No, I didn't even  know who wrote the book. I don't usually take note of the religion of an author whose work I admire, to be perfectly honest.

Regardless of the religion of the author, his writing about Wilberforce shows his interest in and, I assume, approval of the Englishman's humanitarian quest to right a terrible wrong being perpetrated against his fellow man. Without knowing the author's religion (or lack of it), it would seem that he is a person who has strong values that I admire.

Homeschool are you speaking about the author of the song Amazing Grace or about the author of the script for the movie?

The song "Amazing Grace" is credited to John Newton, an Anglican clergyman. He was originally a slave trader, but guilt overcame him and he "reformed." The movie "Amazing Grace" shows how the slaves' cries on the slave ships haunted him for life.

I just looked for a biography of Steven Knight the screenwriter. I found he was born in England and has written several screen plays .  Never did find any reference to his religion.
